Bicycles / Collector research

Bicycles, with their stories intact.

Three equal branches of the knowledge base: Old School BMX, Mountain Biking and Road Biking. Company histories, collecting notes and credited references, not a sales catalog.

Research edition · Updated November 6, 2026 · Sources credited inline

A directory of companies. A record for each bicycle.

A company directory is not a claim that its bicycles are already in the owner’s collection. These research guides form the reference layer; individual collection records can later add photographs, model, serial, condition, modifications, provenance and owner recollections, with uncertainty preserved.

Our collecting checklist

  • Record the complete frame, fork, underside, dropouts, serial and component markings before restoration.
  • Separate a documented factory specification from later upgrades, a period-style rebuild and a modern reissue.
  • Keep original invoices, catalogs, race photographs and ownership notes with the bicycle's record.
  • Record corrosion, cracks, dents and repairs separately from cosmetic condition. Obtain a qualified inspection before riding.
  • Do not assign a model year from decals, paint or a single component date alone. Leave unresolved identifications open.

Resources for investigating and collecting bicycles.

No single archive can identify every bicycle. These are the references we lean on, credited to the people and organizations who built them. Each is independent of Finders of Things; please visit, support and cite them directly.

Identification & value guide

Vintage Bicycle Identification and Value Guide

By the Antique Identifier editorial team

A practical primer on dating a vintage bicycle from frame numbers, head badges and component dates, with notes on what drives collector value. A good first stop before you dig into brand-specific records.

Collector forum

The Classic and Antique Bicycle Exchange (TheCABE)

Community forum, thecabe.com

One of the largest communities of antique, balloon-tire, middleweight, muscle and vintage BMX collectors. Its sub-forums, photo threads and members' firsthand knowledge are invaluable for identifying unusual parts and confirming originality. Follow its rules before posting buy, sell or identify requests.

Restorations & reviews

The Bicycle Resource

thebicycleresource.com

Hands-on build logs, vintage restoration write-ups and ride-tested gear recommendations. Useful for seeing how a restoration is planned and executed, not just how a bicycle is dated.

Registry & stolen check

Bike Index

Nonprofit bicycle registry, bikeindex.org

A free, nonprofit registry used by riders, shops and police departments. Before buying, search a serial to check for a theft report; after buying, register the bicycle. Its serial number guide shows where makers stamp serials.

Club & archive

The Veteran-Cycle Club

Founded 25 June 1955, UK, with a New England group in the USA

A long-running club dedicated to riding and conserving older cycles and studying their history. Members get access to its library, publications and marque specialists. A strong resource for early safety bicycles, British makers and pre-war machines.

Brand-specific serial number lookups

Give the research its due.

Every sourced historical claim links to its reference. Manufacturer retrospectives, museum interpretation, oral histories and community archives are distinguished, rather than blended into one unqualified story. This opening edition is a foundation, not a claim of exhaustive coverage.
