Originals, rebuilds and reissues are different records.

The distinction is not theoretical: Mongoose's 2021 announcement explicitly described new Classics inspired by its 1983 Supergoose and 1984 California Special (Mongoose: 2021 Classics reissues). Our collection template therefore keeps claimed era, frame identity, fork identity and later replacement parts in separate fields.

Our collecting checklist

  • Record the complete frame, fork, underside, dropouts, serial and component markings before restoration.
  • Separate a documented factory specification from later upgrades, a period-style rebuild and a modern reissue.
  • Keep original invoices, catalogs, race photographs and ownership notes with the bicycle's record.
  • Record corrosion, cracks, dents and repairs separately from cosmetic condition. Obtain a qualified inspection before riding.
  • Do not assign a model year from decals, paint or a single component date alone. Leave unresolved identifications open.

Research credit & limits

This first edition draws on manufacturer histories, BMXmuseum, the Thruster enthusiast archive and Jim Alley's filmed oral history as presented by BMXUltra (Hutch: company history; Profile Racing: Champ Pro history; Mongoose: company legacy; BMXmuseum: Redline identification guide; Thruster community archive; BMXUltra: Jim Alley oral history). A serial-number pattern or forum attribution is a research lead, not a substitute for original records or a documented chain of ownership.
