Profile Racing: a collecting field guide

A company history that predates BMX, followed by frames and components that need their own records.

Company history

BMXmuseum dates Jim Alley's Profile Racing to early 1968 as a race-car chassis shop in Flemington, New Jersey, with a move to St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1971 (BMXmuseum: Profile Racing history). That company-founding date is not the introduction date of every later BMX frame or component (BMXmuseum: Profile Racing history).

Models, components & collecting context

Profile's own history dates the Champ Pro frame-and-fork launch to 1981 and describes Champ Mini, Champ Junior and Cruiser additions in 1982 (Profile Racing: Champ Pro history). The Jim Alley oral-history episode also discusses Profile's early frame manufacturing and its connection to the first Hutch run (BMXUltra: Jim Alley oral history).

What to document

Inventory frame, fork, crank arms, spindle, hubs and other branded parts separately. A Profile crank on another maker’s frame is a component record, not evidence that the complete bicycle is a Profile factory build.

Our collecting checklist

  • Record the complete frame, fork, underside, dropouts, serial and component markings before restoration.
  • Separate a documented factory specification from later upgrades, a period-style rebuild and a modern reissue.
  • Keep original invoices, catalogs, race photographs and ownership notes with the bicycle's record.
  • Record corrosion, cracks, dents and repairs separately from cosmetic condition. Obtain a qualified inspection before riding.
  • Do not assign a model year from decals, paint or a single component date alone. Leave unresolved identifications open.

A place for the collection record

No owner-held bicycle is asserted in this guide. Add the actual bike’s photographs, exact model, serial, finish, parts list, modifications, provenance and your own account as a separate record; date and credit each addition.

Research credit & open questions

The company timeline supplies model milestones; BMXmuseum supplies the early-company account, and the filmed recollection is explicitly attributed to Jim Alley (Profile Racing: Champ Pro history; BMXmuseum: Profile Racing history; BMXUltra: Jim Alley oral history).

These are starting references rather than a valuation or authentication certificate. Unresolved year, variant and production-origin questions should remain explicitly unresolved.
