Hutch: a collecting field guide
A racing-to-freestyle story that requires separating the early company from later revivals.

Company history
Hutch dates its origins to Richard Hutchins in 1979 and identifies frames, forks, Pro Racer race bikes, Trick Star freestyle bikes and the Judge among its historical products (Hutch: company history). Its own account describes later ownership changes and international production, so “Hutch” alone is not a sufficient date or manufacturing-origin description (Hutch: company history).
Models, components & collecting context
Jim Alley's filmed oral history, summarized by BMXUltra, says Profile fabricated the first run of Hutch frames after contact from Rich Hutchins, using the Profile Champ Pro as an initial template (BMXUltra: Jim Alley oral history). That account documents a manufacturing connection; it is not a universal serial-number decoder or proof that every Hutch frame was built by Profile (BMXUltra: Jim Alley oral history).
What to document
Start by identifying racing versus freestyle model, then document the frame and fork separately. Keep the full serial, weld and dropout photographs with any catalog comparison; do not use replacement decals as authentication.
Our collecting checklist
- Record the complete frame, fork, underside, dropouts, serial and component markings before restoration.
- Separate a documented factory specification from later upgrades, a period-style rebuild and a modern reissue.
- Keep original invoices, catalogs, race photographs and ownership notes with the bicycle's record.
- Record corrosion, cracks, dents and repairs separately from cosmetic condition. Obtain a qualified inspection before riding.
- Do not assign a model year from decals, paint or a single component date alone. Leave unresolved identifications open.
A place for the collection record
No owner-held bicycle is asserted in this guide. Add the actual bike’s photographs, exact model, serial, finish, parts list, modifications, provenance and your own account as a separate record; date and credit each addition.
Research credit & open questions
The company is the source for its own timeline; Jim Alley's oral history is attributed as recollection rather than treated as a substitute for production ledgers (Hutch: company history; BMXUltra: Jim Alley oral history).
These are starting references rather than a valuation or authentication certificate. Unresolved year, variant and production-origin questions should remain explicitly unresolved.
